Kratom and Coffee: Why Both Belong to the Same Plant Family

When you tell someone that kratom and coffee are botanically related, you tend to be met with surprised looks. And yes – it is true: both plants belong to the family Rubiaceae, known in English as the coffee or madder family. That is not a marketing statement, it is botanical classification.

What this kinship means chemically and biologically – and where the differences lie – is explained in this article.

The Rubiaceae: one of the largest plant families in the world

According to current botany, the Rubiaceae comprise more than 13,000 species in over 600 genera. That places them among the ten most species-rich plant families worldwide. The family is predominantly tropical in distribution and includes trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants.

The kinship between coffee and kratom is therefore comparable to the kinship between the tomato and the potato – both nightshades, both entirely different plants with entirely different characteristics.

Coffea arabica vs. Mitragyna speciosa: the botanical differences

Both plants grow in tropical regions, but they look very different:

Coffee (Coffea arabica / Coffea robusta):

  • Shrub or small tree, 3–5 m tall
  • Origin: originally Ethiopia, today cultivated worldwide
  • Fruit: red or yellow coffee cherries
  • Characteristic alkaloid: mainly caffeine (a methylxanthine alkaloid)

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa):

  • Large tropical tree that can reach a height of up to 25 m
  • Origin: South-East Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea)
  • Harvest: the leaves are picked by hand
  • Characteristic alkaloids: mainly mitragynine and 7-OH-mitragynine (indole alkaloids)

What do caffeine and mitragynine have in common – and what do they not?

Both are alkaloids – nitrogen-containing organic compounds of plant origin. That, however, is where the chemical common ground ends.

Caffeine belongs to the group of purine alkaloids (more precisely: the methylxanthines). It binds to adenosine receptors in the brain and blocks the tiredness signal there.

Mitragynine belongs to the group of indole alkaloids – an entirely different class of alkaloid. It has a markedly more complex, multi-stage ring structure and binds to completely different receptor types than caffeine.

The chemical relationship therefore exists at family level (Rubiaceae) – but the two alkaloids are fundamentally different in structure and in pharmacology.

Why does this matter?

In everyday terms, this botanical kinship is above all a good point of entry for people who are not yet familiar with kratom. The statement “kratom is related to coffee” creates a familiar context and makes one thing clear: this is a cultivated plant from tropical Asia, not a synthetic or especially exotic substance.

At the same time it is important not to overstate the point: kinship at family level does not mean that kratom and coffee behave alike or that the two should be equated. The tomato and deadly nightshade are both members of the nightshade family as well – and are nonetheless fundamentally different.

Growing regions: where coffee and kratom grow side by side

Interestingly, there are geographical overlaps: in parts of Indonesia, both coffee and kratom are cultivated. On Sumatra and Borneo in particular – two of the most important kratom-growing regions – there are also significant coffee-growing traditions.

The shared climate has a botanical explanation: both plants need warm, humid tropical conditions, well-drained soils rich in humus, and shelter from direct midday sun.
