Kratom varieties explained simply

In kratom (Mitragyna speciosa), “variety” usually means the vein colour (green/white/red/yellow) plus a regional or style name. Behind these labels sit cultivation, time of harvest and, above all, processing (drying and fermentation). This is why the alkaloid profile can differ from batch to batch.

The vein colours

A colour label describes neither a separate plant species nor a botanical subspecies. It names a processing route: the harvest window, the drying method, the drying time and whether a fermentation took place. What changes along that route can be described chemically and measured in a laboratory.

Green vein

  • Processing: Leaf from a middle harvest window, dried mostly in the shade or with little added heat. Short drying time, little direct sunlight, no deliberately induced fermentation.
  • What happens chemically: Short, shaded drying limits oxidative conversion of the indole alkaloids. The ratio of mitragynine to its accompanying alkaloids stays closer to that of the fresh leaf than it does after longer or damper procedures.
  • Why no statement about effects follows from this: A chromatogram describes substance proportions in a sample. Inferring an effect in humans from a substance proportion would require controlled human studies, and none exist for these processing differences. The colour label is therefore a process statement, not a promised profile.

White vein

  • Processing: Tends to come from an earlier harvest window and younger leaf material, followed by light, brisk drying – often with moving air rather than direct sun, to avoid subsequent darkening.
  • What happens chemically: Short drying times and low moisture leave little room for enzymatic and oxidative conversion. The pale leaf colour is an optical feature of how the material was dried, not a measure of alkaloid content.
  • Why no statement about effects follows from this: Colour and content do not correlate reliably. Two lightly dried batches from different stocks can differ markedly in mitragynine content. Only an analysis of the specific batch – by HPLC or LC-MS, for example – produces a defensible figure.

Red vein

  • Processing: Later harvest, meaning more mature leaf material, plus longer or darker drying. A fermentation step is common as well, in which the leaf rests under residual moisture and warmth, frequently in sealed containers or bags.
  • What happens chemically: Moisture, warmth, light and atmospheric oxygen set oxidative and enzymatic reactions in motion. Part of the mitragynine is converted into downstream products; small amounts of 7-hydroxymitragynine also arise along this route. The alkaloid profile shifts measurably compared with the same raw material processed without fermentation.
  • Why no statement about effects follows from this: A measurable shift in a laboratory report is a statement about the sample, not about the person. How large the shift turns out to be also depends on duration, temperature and residual moisture, and it differs from producer to producer – “red” is not a standardised state but a family of procedures.

Yellow / gold

  • Processing: Not a separate tree type. The label covers either blends of several batches or an extended curing step, that is, a controlled secondary drying.
  • What happens chemically: In a blend, the profile is arithmetically a weighted average of the source batches – no new substance is created, the proportions merely shift pro rata. With extended curing, the same oxidation processes run as in the red procedures, only more slowly and less pronounced.
  • Why no statement about effects follows from this: “Yellow” names the outcome of a process, not a source plant. Because neither the blend ratios nor the curing parameters are fixed across the trade, the same term can mean two entirely different sets of laboratory values at two suppliers.

Important: These profile descriptions are not standardised and can deviate considerably depending on origin, processing, blend and individual perception. Analytical data (for example an alkaloid profile by HPLC/LC-MS) help with an objective classification.


Regional and trade names (a selection)

  • Bali, Borneo/Kalimantan, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Papua, Malay/Malaysian, Thai, Vietnam – point to a region or style; the actual origin varies with the supply chain.
  • Maeng Da – roughly means “selected/high grade”; usually a selection or blend, not a separate plant species.
  • Bentuangie – frequently a fermented “red” style.
  • Hulu, Kapuas, JongKong – micro-regional references and trade designations.

Common style terms – what they usually mean

These terms are not standardised. They often describe processing, grind size or blend concepts. It is always best to ask for laboratory values (for example HPLC/LC-MS).

  • Premium / Superior / Reserve – marketing for selection (finer leaf, fewer stems and veins).
  • Super / Super Green / Super White / Super Red – a trade term with no standardised meaning; in practice it usually refers to sieving or to a particular leaf fraction.
  • Maeng Da – see above; a selection or blend aimed at a desired profile.
  • Horn / horned leaf – refers to serrated leaf edges; no guaranteed chemical difference.
  • Elephant – large leaves, “elephant ears”; a stylistic label.
  • Plantation / wild / deep jungle – cultivation mode or origin style; chemically neither automatically better nor worse.
  • First flush / late harvest – harvest window (younger versus more mature leaves).
  • Sun-dried / shade-dried – drying in sun or shade; can influence the profile.
  • Fermented / cured / chocolate – additional fermentation or curing (frequently used for “red/chocolate”).
  • Yellow / gold – see above; a blend or a particular curing process.
  • Micronised / nano – a particularly fine grind; it increases the surface area but does not automatically change the chemistry.
  • Stem & vein – deliberately contains stems and leaf veins; a different ratio of accompanying substances.
  • Enhanced / fortifiedenriched (for example mixed with extracts); pay close attention to transparency and analytics.
  • UE / UEI / extract – indications of extracts or enriched products; heavily dependent on the manufacturing method.
  • Standardised – a laboratory specification (for example “standardised extract”); it denotes a defined target value for one alkaloid.

Why do varieties differ?

  • Genetics & location (soil, light, rainfall, microclimate)
  • Time of harvest & leaf age
  • Drying and fermentation (sun or shade, temperature, duration)
  • Storage (humidity, air, light)
  • Blends (targeted mixtures aimed at a desired profile)

How to read variety labels sensibly

  1. Read colour and name together: “Green Borneo” means a processing colour and a style or origin.
  2. Ask for analytics: The alkaloid profile (for example mitragynine content in per cent) is what makes batches comparable.
  3. Mind the batch: Same name ≠ same chemistry; check the harvest year and batch number.
  4. Transparency about processing: Ask about drying and fermentation and about any blends or enhancements.
  5. Grind size & purity: “Micronised” says something about particle size, not about alkaloid content.

Commonly cited alkaloids

  • Mitragynine (often the leading component by quantity)
  • Paynantheine, speciogynine, speciociliatine (further indole alkaloids)
  • 7-hydroxymitragynine (usually in very small amounts)

Which proportions are present is batch-dependent and should be documented analytically. A certificate of analysis should ideally state the method (HPLC or LC-MS), the test date, the batch number and the quantified share of each alkaloid – only those details make two batches comparable at all.
